Make Yellow Monochrome Backgrounds Great Again, 2023,
155 x 135 cm,
acrylic and oil on canvas
Xavier Karger is blending paintings with various mediums and thus creates a visual fusion that references pop culture, advertising, and art history. In the past his paintings were dominated by energetic brushstrokes and colorful background but recently they transitioned into more monochromatic works with small hyperrealistic touches. By using vivid monochromatic colors and depicting small realistic objects, the artist generates a captivating moment drawing the viewer into the canvas, while the infusion of elements from pop and movie culture adds relatability.

Xavier’s work serves as a platform for addressing pressing social concerns, offering a visual commentary on the challenges our world faces today. The artist wants to highlight issues such as the minimization of the health effects, social and political impacts, and criminal aspects of drug consumption, shedding light on the potential dangers of such perspectives. The preference for working on large canvases not only enhances the scale of the creations but also allows the viewer to step back and fully engage with the works.
