STATEMENT
Nika Schmitt’s work moves between mechanism and metaphor, exploring how repetition, Energy and material shape both physical environments and human perception. Rooted in a practice of building electro mechanical sculptures that evolve, loop, self-disrupt and sometimes come apart, her installations reflect tensions between precision and collapse, humour and urgency, presence and absence. Through philosophical reflection, hands-on experimentation and a growing commitment to collaboration, Schmitt continues to explore what self-regulating and self-maintaining systems can reveal about the world we inhabit. Her interest in Energy, not just as a technical element but a cultural and symbolic force, reflects a desire to Connect the inner logic of her systems to a larger social and cultural dynamic. Whether working with sound, movement, light, circuitry or silence, her practice remains focused on tracing the delicate and sometimes absurd mechanics that keep running, until they don’t.
Nika Schmitt is an artist based in Rotterdam and Luxembourg. She holds a Master of Music from the ArtScience Interfaculty in the Hague (2021) and BFA from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Maastricht (2017). In 2018, she won first Prize in the Sonic Art Competition Sonotopia (Beethoven Foundation Bonn), followed by a solo exhibition at Fabrik 45. Her installation Echotrope was shown at Philharmonie Luxembourg and the rainy days festival. Other notable projects include Radau Radar (Annexe 22, Luxembourg) and LOOP, her graduation work, which received the ArtScience Master Prize in 2021. During the same year, she took part in the residency Expeditions in Specific Territories, developing works in the port cities of Montevideo and Rostock. In 2022, she received theEdward Steichen Award, which led to a residency in ISCP in New York and the solo show égo/égal at Field Projects. In 2024, she presented Ton Ton, a ceramic robotic arm caught in a feedback loop, at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.
