Lara Weiler’s works are a painterly examination of the staged illusory world of social media, the contemporary ideal of beauty and the associated aesthetics, as well as the ubiquitous attributes and everyday heroes of the consumer society. It is a dichotomy between the sensitivity of overlooked trivial beauty and the self-determined painterly staging.
In Lara's current body of work, she delves into the concept of 'everyday heroes'—those often-overlooked objects that have become integral to our daily lives, yet are dismissed as insignificant in a world increasingly driven by consumer culture. These objects, once essential, now blend into the background, unnoticed and undervalued. They serve as quiet symbols of contemporary life and its constant churn of consumption.
A central theme of Lara Weiler's practice is the 'clothes chair,' an everyday object reimagined. These chairs, repurposed to function as both seating and storage, reflect the dual nature of modern life: utility and excess. By transforming them into versatile art pieces, I highlight the intersection of comfort, convenience, and the relentless pace of contemporary society.
Beyond their usefulness, Lara also examines the final stages of these objects—their decay and eventual abandonment. Trash and waste, in this context, become a repository for retired 'heroes.' Garbage cans collect the remnants of what was once essential, embodying the inevitable end of consumer goods. In this cycle of use, discard, and decay, Lara explores the fleeting value we assign to the objects that populate our lives.
Lara Weiler invites the viewer to reconsider the overlooked, to reflect on the transience of value, and to question how we relate to the things that surround us.
